Old Town

Old Town is the historic district of Alexandria Virginia, situated in the southeastern area of the city along the Potomac River. A teenage surveyor, George Washington, drew up the plans for the city in 1748. It became a one of most vital seaports on the east coast by colonial times.

Today, Old Town is well known for its tree lined brick sidewalks, historic buildings, row homes, art galleries, antique shops, and restaurants. In addition, Old Town has one of the oldest continuously operating farmers market in the United States, operating since 1753.

In the center of the intersection of Washington and Prince streets stands a statue of a lone Confederate soldier which marks the spot where Confederate States of America military units from Alexandria left to join the Confederate Army at the beginning of the American Civil War. The first photograph in the gallery is this Southern Facing Confederate Soldier.
